Founder, Fola Ogunsola Foundation, FOF, Mrs Fola Ogunsola has outlined lack of skills, poor attitude to work or interviews, wrong expectations and poor personal development, as the reasons for graduates’ unemployment, at the fourth Life After Campus Seminar in University of Lagos, UNILAG.
Speaking on the essence of the seminar and the theme Skills required for a dynamic and challenging 21st century working environment, the Fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN and Institute of Taxation said; “Our objective is to achieve drastic employment through sponsors and those whose hearts have been touched to add value. After talking to 120 managing directors of companies, they said the current crop of graduates are unemployable. We particularly seek to expose students to what employers are looking for. We are here so you would not be part of the statistics. Employers want assets not liability, we are looking to build basic pre requisite skills for employment.”
Dean of Students of Affairs, UNILAG, Prof Wale Babawale, stating why the foundation has continually been allowed access to the school provided; “Based on interaction with them, feedback from students and impact of the efforts of the foundation on students, we have seen they are working and we are encouraging them.
“We are trying to create a meeting between town and gown, that is why we are encouraging her and imploring for more seminars to bridge the gap between employers and employees. Students need to develop their own abilities, have confidence and audacity. They need to be organised, disciplined and focused, most of all, remove all forms of self doubt.” Also addressing the students who mostly comprised of the ultimate and penultimate set of the school, Mr Kehinde Oyeleke a Fellow of ICAN who currently sits on the audit committee, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, advised students on the attributes necessary for becoming an employable graduate “be passionate, focused, have integrity, be a person of quality mind as an entrepreneur, have a set goal and be sacrificial” Husband of the founder, Barrister Wale Ogunsola equally advised; “No matter how young you are in life or how tall you are, you cannot claim to know what tomorrow will be. Your attitude goes a long way in life. Everyone has a reason for coming to school, reality sets in after school. If you don’t defend your future, your future will forget you.”
